Product Description
Being "so stressed" has to be the most common description for a woman today -- no matter your age or marital status, whether you have a career or work inside the home. Stress is the gift of modern life that keeps on giving, because, even after you've gotten through a stressful day or week, the effects on your body and mind linger, whether you're aware of them or not. And they can build up and make you sick -- unless you do something to stop them. That's where So Stressed, a landmark new guide to women's health, can help.

The realization that stress was the most common cause of all the different symptoms and ailments that their patients were coming to them for was a eureka moment for internationally renowned OB-GYN physicians Stephanie McClellan and Beth Hamilton. To find out how stress could be the root cause of diseases as disparate as chronic pain, gynecological disorders and depression, asthma and metabolic disorders, Drs. McClellan and Hamilton embarked on a unique medical quest -- they wanted to find the latest discoveries emerging around the world in the science of stress and put them all together in treatments to help their patients now. Their urgent mission took them to the leading researchers at the best medical centers around the world, where they learned the exciting findings that they reveal in this fascinating new approach to women's health, So Stressed.

With information from the medical and psychological sciences of stress that no other practicing physician or clinician has implemented, So Stressed shows you what stress is doing to every cell in your body, how it disrupts the intricate balance of your body's systems, and most important what you can do, starting today, to restore your body's health and prevent yourself from getting sick. Drs. McClellan and Hamilton -- who are widely sought after for their compassionate manner and educational approach to their patients -- have treated more than 16,000 women in their shared three decades of medical practice. Through their timely research and unique, integrative approach to patient care, they have developed four groundbreaking stress types, each with unique patterns for potential illness and disease -- presented here for the first time -- that you can use to identify the ways that stress is affecting your body and mind.

Once you know your unique stress profile, the doctors help you learn new ways to see and respond to stress, reduce it and its effects on your body, and even prevent the life-threatening illnesses it causes. You'll find the right program -- specifically designed for the way you fit into your stress type -- with prescriptive advice for the best mental relaxation techniques, nutrition, exercise, and restoration practices for you. Filled with instructive and inspiring case stories from their patients' and their own life experience, Drs. McClellan and Hamilton bridge the gap between the lab bench and the bedside in this comprehensive program for total health.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening read that validates unique responses to stress   July 28, 2010
Brenna
I got this book at the library, devoured it, and now am buying a copy to keep at home as a reference. The authors do a fantastic job of introducing the non-medical person to the interaction between our endocrinal (hormonal) systems and our nervous systems, and how to restore balance between the two. As somebody who "burned out" during an over-demanding career and is now paying the health consequences, I only wish I'd understand these principles ten years ago, before I went too far down that road. I have been implemented many of the authors' recommendations and see the book as a key fixture in my own personal transformation into better personal health. Do yourself a favor and read it, then tell a friend what you learned.

5 out of 5 stars individualized advice about dealing with stress...   April 25, 2010
H. Lyons (Raleigh, NC United States)
I found this book to be incredibly helpful because it's not a "one size fits all" prescription for dealing with stress. The authors emphasize that we manifest our reactions to stress differently, and they create four profiles for how people manifest their reactions to chronic stress. I found it easy to recognize myself in one of the profiles (and a little humbling!) and I have been finding their advice for helping myself to be useful and clear. I like the combination of "case study" information (stories from their patients' lives) alongside medical research information As with any book about health, you have to read it in the context of what you already know about yourself and you body. However, I found this book helped me think about my chronic stress in new ways and provided me with some new tools for helping myself become healthier. I have bought copies to give as gifts and I think this is a book that I and others will return to over and over again. Also, although it is labeled as pertaining to women, much of the information is useful to men as well.

5 out of 5 stars The answers..............   April 17, 2010
Barbara M. Murphy (Tustin, CA United States)
Dr. McClellan is a wonderful, caring doctor. In this book, with Dr. Beth Hamilton, they expose the crazy called 'stress' that women live with and suffer due to.
While some of it gets a little technical and big wordy - the answers come thru loud and clear. Women need to take care of themselves! We are busy taking care of everyone else that there is no time left for ourselves - NOW it is time to take care of ourselves!
With practical advice and suggestions they provide a game plan to recreate a healthy life.
This book also provided some answers as to my daughters stress and ability/unability to deal with it due to fetus and early life stress experienced by me.

5 out of 5 stars Got this for my wife...   April 14, 2010
David G. King (Victoria, TX USA)
I got this book for my wife after seeing the authors on Good Morning America....My wife is not an avid reader of non-fiction but she devoured this book! And more than that she immediately began implementing the suggestions from it....As a result she has been able to learn where she learned how to deal with stress from her mother, and see how she has patterned it for our two children. She has begun to change her eating habits and is beginning to actually reduce her response to the coniderable stress in her life. A great book that has really helped!

4 out of 5 stars very informative   April 2, 2010
L. Parez
Wish I had had this information in my 30's. But it is never too late to use this type of women's health information. I will pass this on to my daughter and daughter-in-law.
