5 out of 5 stars Finally an Answer   July 12, 2010

I've suffered with anxiety and panic disorder for almost 20 years. I never got a clear answer from other books, and I got very little relief from doctors and medications. This book clearly explains what I have known for years, but have been unable to translate to others, and most importantly, it explains the simple and effective CURE.

This book is a must-read for anyone with a nervous problem or feelings of persistant anxiety. It should also be read by the person's family, because there is great help described within to aleviate misunderstandings of these illnesses.

I've discussed this book and its suggestions with my doctor, and I now am on the way to recovery. I am learning to apply the lessons and have made genuine progress. I've been slowly reducing medications that I've been on for years and finally feel free of this menace, even though I know there may be setbacks. I recognize the symtoms for what they are, apply the techniques taught in this book, and enjoy myself now, where before there was only misery.

Thank you Dr. Weekes for helping to cure me, and shame on the misguided and uninformed medical community for not introducing me to her work years ago.

I think my expectations may have been a bit high going into this book. I've read a few other books on panic and anxiety, and I'd probably put this at the bottom of the bunch.

The advice to "just float" through the panic was laughable. I tried it over and over and over again, but the "floating" didn't seem to help. My best technique for high excitement activities, as learned from the book "From Panic to Power," is to want MORE of that feeling of excitement. The floating seemed to put me in a weaker position, whereas when I was approaching things with excitement and energy seemed to work much better.

I'm sure this book has helped many people, but for me, it wasn't very insightful.

You just have to be willing to apply the concepts! As someone who has suffered from anxiety and panic for the last 12 years, this book could not have come at a better time. Many days, even getting through the workday is a struggle, an I feel like I'm dying right here at my desk!

Dr. Weekes' book is a quick and easy read (and from what I can tell, she speaks like a British person... her vocabulary and way of wording things is both serene and charming :-) She gives you the tools and techniques to work through your anxious or panicky episodes... No miracle cures, no false promises, just simple, effective truth. She also delves into what is going on in your mind and body on a physiological level, to help you understand WHY you feel so horrible, and that you are NOT, by any means, "crazy". She addressed symptoms that I assumed only I suffered from and made me realize that I'm far from the only person who struggles with these anxious/panicked thoughts and horrible physical effects every day. One thing that really helped me was highlighting the sentences/paragraphs that I most identified with or found to be soothing... when panic strikes at my desk or at home, I pull out my little book and re-read those highlighted sections- an IMMENSE help. It helps to remind me that these are all physical reactions & part of a set pattern- there is no need to fear.

As far as the reader who gave the book low ratings due to religious content- while I respect their right to have their own opinion, I didn't find this book to be "preachy" at all. That is fortunate, because even though I'm sort of a "Christian-Buddhist" hybrid, I find pushy, overbearing zealots to be a huge turn off. Giving people some food for thought on your brand of religion, to me, is fine... But leave them to make their own choices (no pushing, badgering, etc... ugh!). The author does just that- gives a bit of food for thought and that is the end of that. The section referencing "putting your faith in Him" is quite small, so to anyone who does not consider themselves a religious person, please don't let a few pages put you off a book that by all other accounts could be incredibly helpful to you. More than anything, I got the impression that the author is not trying to convert patients to Christianity in particular, but is instead encouraging them to put their faith in something, ANYTHING bigger than themselves... Be it God, Allah, Buddah, humanity, the universe in general- it is soothing when you stop viewing the world as a cold, heartless & scary place, and instead begin to have faith that no matter how badly you feel, there are good things and good people waiting for you... It is fully within your capabilities to heal and live a peaceful life.

The quality of the books contents along with the great price make this a must read for anyone looking to take their life back... This is now the most valued book in my entire collection!

If you are an atheist not ready for conversion, steer clear of this book. Aside from the outdated unscientific insights, albeit well intended, I was put off by the "Leave vengeance to God" (p 108) and "So to tell people to put their faith in God and let Him cure them works only for those who have such faith and know how to apply it. These are indeed blessed. The others must be shown the way." (p 180). What? MUST be shown the way? Proselytizing to the core. Sorry atheists, no hope for you. Any self help book worth its weight should be devoid of such deriding religious bias lacking practical scientific application. I recommend reading David Ramsay Steele instead.

This book literally saved my life when I was in the depths of anxiety. The method works. It is simple, and presented in a compassionate and clear way. This is the one that will actually help you. Take a leap of faith.
